Völkl Racetiger GS review 2020

AWARD
Best performance!

PROSKILAB™ reviewers' comments

Völkl has earned a reputation as a performance-oriented brand, both for frontside skis as well as all-mountain skis. We have been testing skis for 14 years, and we have to admit that this reputation has rarely been denied by the Proskilab testers.

And this will not change with the Racetiger GS, which won the “Best Performance” award of this ski review.

The ski loves to go fast, it “just wants to accelerate,” and it has the means to do so. The testers praised the “phenomenal edge grip,” incredible stability, turn quality, and smoothness in the turn. Stability at very high speed is exceptional.

One of the testers wrote, “Performance before fun!” because the ski is designed for performance above all. You need to be committed and well-positioned, especially at the beginning of the turn. It is not very versatile or easy to use. In particular, cruisy skidded turns at moderate speed are not its cup of tea. The ski needs speed and lacks agility at low speeds. It is not the ideal ski for cruising around the slopes or making short turns at slow speeds.

The Völkl Racetiger GS does not break the brand’s promise. It is an uncompromising ski designed for performance. We recommend it to aggressive advanced to expert skiers or racers, of medium to heavy build, who want performance that is similar to a FIS ski.

Review: Pros

  • Very high-level performance
  • Exceptional stability and edge grip
  • Acceleration in the turn
  • Smooth and solid throughout the turn

Review: Cons

  • Technically and physically demanding
  • Not very comfortable at low speed and in short turns
  • Requires skier to be in a good position
  • Performs very well but is not very playful

Manufacturer's remarks

The famous Racetiger from the German brand has undergone a few minor adjustments.
The famous UVO, developed by Marker engineers, is now UVO 3D. It is a freely rotating vibration dampening device with a spring that allows the UVO 3D to move up and down to reduce vibrations and improve ski-snow contact. In terms of construction, the Racetiger has the 3D Glass technology: fiberglass placed vertically along the sidewalls at the tip and tail, which gives the ski greater stiffness and power. The fiberglass is flat at the bindings, so skiers can flex the ski more easily.
The Racetiger GS is a radical ski designed for long turns, and it loves speed!
The Racetiger GS and SL are both available in a PRO version with the famous Marker WC Piston Plate.
