Völkl Racetiger RC review 2020

PROSKILAB™ reviewers' comments

In this category, we are looking for skis that are easy for low level skiers to use but that can also help them to improve their technique.

Specifically, we expect the ski to pivot easily (that is, to rotate a flat ski), that skidded turns are progressive and smooth, and that the ski performs correctly when the skier is well-centered or slightly back. If these criteria are met, we then look at a ski’s ability to help a skier progress toward carved turns.

The Völkl Racetiger RC is clearly more performance-oriented and not comfortable with the first half of the criteria. Skidding, sliding, and cruising are not intuitive. The ski has a natural tendency to dig in and carve. It is not comfortable being flat and needs to be put on edge aggressively.

The Völkl Racetiger RC is obviously too geared towards performance to be included in this category. It is a good ski but designed for skiers of a much higher technical ability who have already mastered carving.

Review: Pros

  • Performance
  • Comfortable and stable at high speed in long turns
  • Stiff and grippy

Review: Cons

  • Less comfortable in skidded turns
  • Pivots poorly
  • Not happy if ski is flat or edge angles are small

Manufacturer's remarks

For the 2019/2020 season, the Racetiger RC and SC feature new technology. These skis have the famous UVO 3D: It is a freely rotating vibration dampening device with a spring that allows the UVO 3D to move up and down to reduce vibrations and improve ski-snow contact. In terms of construction, the Racetiger has the 3D Glass technology: fiberglass placed vertically along the sidewalls at the tip and tail, which gives the ski greater stiffness and power. The fiberglass is flat at the bindings, so skiers can flex the ski more easily. The Racetiger RC is better suited to long turns, for speed freaks and long turn fanatics. There is no Titanal plate for the RC and the SC. They are less elitist and more comfortable that the GS and SL models in the range. It is the perfect ski to ski groomers all day long without getting tired.
